Foundations of European Energy Policy and Sustainable Transportation

DAY 1: EUROPEAN ENERGY SECURITY AND DIPLOMACY

DAY 2: INTRODUCTION TO EUROPEAN ENERGY POLICY

DAY 3: RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES AND MARKETS

DAY 5: INDUSTRY VISIT
SHORT DESCRIPTION
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) station on the island of Revythoussa is a pivotal component of Greece’s energy infrastructure, serving as a vital nexus for enhancing the nation’s energy security and diversifying its energy portfolio. Strategically situated in the Saronic Gulf, this facility is equipped with advanced technology capable of storing and re-evaporating vast amounts of liquefied natural gas. This capability not only ensures a steady supply of natural gas, critical for both residential and industrial energy consumption, but also enables Greece to respond effectively to fluctuations in energy demand.

DAY 5: INDUSTRY VISIT
SHORT DESCRIPTION
Greece is the largest ship-owning State with approximately 1/5 of the total world merchant fleet by tonnage. Piraeus’ wider area is the biggest maritime hub of the country, hosting Piraeus port and many shipping companies, shipyards, and related entities. The Port of Piraeus is the biggest in Greece, the 24th-largest container port globally, the fourth largest in Europe and the largest in the eastern Mediterranean. The visit will include the Port of Piraeus and selected shipping companies. The students will experience the structure and operations of the Piraeus port. They will also have an insight into a shipping company’s structure and operations in relation to the recent challenges of decarbonization and sustainability (e.g. ship electrification, ballast water management).

The University can assist enrolled students in their search for accommodation for the Summer University. IUM Student Services will also provide information regarding visas, transportation, entertainment, and more.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants are current college/university students and/or individuals aged at least 18 with bachelor’s, master’s, or higher degrees and Postgraduate Students in Business Administration Infrastructure Management.
